24 August

Tomorrow I leave for Park City / Midway, Utah for a long overdue exploratory trip out west to check out one of the places that I have been checking out online. Two things draw me to this area: snow and affordable real estate. The rest of what I'm looking for in a place ranges from the broad (small town, sun, affordable) to the particular (catholic church, farmers market, up and coming but laid back).

The top three contenders in the 'Where Should I Move' adventure continue to be:

1. Incline Village / Tahoe / Truckee

2. Evergreen, Colorado

3. Park City / Midway, Utah

Two close contenders are:

4. Bend / Ashland, Oregon

5. Bozeman / Livingston / Whitefish / Bigfork, Montana

Packing is going well and the timing of my move is first week of October. Does it seem strange that I still haven't decided where I'm moving????

Julie and Julia and the Mantra of Doing-ness

This weekend two things happened.

First, I was as having one of my "I have accomplished nothing in the past year, I am a loser," moments, which is not unusual as these unproductive thoughts occur almost daily, generally upon waking.

Second, I went to see a movie, in a theatre. This is unusual because a) I rarely go to movies, and b) I rarely leave the house (okay, not really: I do go to work every day;but kinda, yes: apart from work, bookstores, and groceries, I find home very appealing.)

My choice of film was related to two of my three passions (books, cooking, and religion): Julie and Julia, written and directed by Nora Ephron, based on the book and blog, of the same name, by Julie Powell, and memoir of Julia Child My Life in France. I loved the film. I'd read Julie and Julia when it first came out in hardback, driven by my love of all things Julia Child and a curiosity to learn just how one woman (Julie Powell) changed her life.

By the end of the film I found myself thril…

One week, what have I been up to? Packing! That's right, I continue to pack boxes of books and winter clothes. I went out and bought more packing tape and bubble wrap and then packed a box full of framed photos and icons. Little by little a pyramid of boxes is beginning to form in a corner of the living room.

Where are all these boxes going? Hmmmm.....

4 August

I started packing today! Okay, it was only four boxes, but I got started. I packed my books, and a box of winter coats. I also went through my closet and started culling the stuff I didn't want to take with me, that I wanted to give away.

It's a great feeling. No, I still haven't decided where I'm moving.....but I am moving. And the proof is that today I started packing!

Now to our conversation with Allison....

As an outsider looking in, Allison, you appear to have an ideal life: handsome husband (I’m guessing!), beautiful and bright children (genetics!) and a stellar career as a rising literary star (New York Times bestsellers!)…. I’m guessing that the impetus for this book didn’t come from your own life. So how did you come up with the premise behind Time of My Life?

Aw, well, thank you! I’m lucky enough to have a wonderful life, yes, but you know, every life has its challenges and its up and downs, so don’t idealize it too much…
